Stabilising Chlorine
Basic Idea
Sunlight breaks down swimming pool chlorine. There are two main ways to avoid this happening. One is to prevent the sun from reaching the pool water – a good reason to have indoor swimming pools. The other main way is to use cyanuric acid, which helps prevent the breakdown of pool chlorine, and is known as a stabiliser for that reason. A stabilised pool can reduce chlorine consumption by 50%, and for the average pool owner is much cheaper than building a roof to keep sunlight off the pool. Besides, sunlight can help warm the pool and the pool area, so may be a desirable thing.
