Just to show that I've been keeping up-to-date with the rest of the world:
PHYSICS NEWS UPDATE
The American Institute of Physics Bulletin of Physics News Number 550 August
1, 2001 by Phillip F. Schewe, Ben Stein, and James Riordon
ELEMENT 118 HAS BEEN ERASED FROM THE PERIODIC TABLE. In 1999 scientists
at LBL reported evidence for element 118 in high energy lead-krypton interactions
http://www.aip.org/enews/physnews/1999/split/pnu432-1.htm). Follow-up experiments
at LBL and elsewhere (such as the GSI lab in Germany) have failed to confirm
the results. The LBL scientists have now re-analyzed their data and conclude
that the original evidence was spurious. In an article submitted to Physical
Review Letters, they retract their claim for the discovery of element 118.
Well, isn't that interesting.

I'm back in Ramnicu Valcea again, after saying goodbye to the wonderful folk
in Timisoara. (This Internet Cafe has got new computer desks since last time
I was here.) Look out for the celebratory T-shirt when I get back to Auckland.
The very first day I wore it a bird dumped on it. (My first bird strike in
YEARS.) At the time I was at a river with the streetkids so the shirt also
had its first wash.
I've been given a couple of days compulsory rest before starting on the local
building project with genuine builder Andy from good old New Zealand, so now
is the time to send those long (or short) emails you've been putting off writing.
The best thing is that Andy has a circular saw! (Although he was going to
set up a chainsaw and sawhorses for my first day on the job.)
God bless all.
