From a reader: Did they give you back your pocket knife later,
or was it transferred to your main luggage?
The first time they transferred it to a little plastic bag with my name on
it and a little ticket that I had to present in Lima [Peru] to reclaim it
[at about 3am]. I've naturally kept the bag as a souvenir.
The second time they got my pocket knife off me they asked me before my checked
luggage vanished (at La Paz airport [Bolivia]) so they put it in the outside
pocket of my backpack. Then they wrapped plastic around the bottom half of
the pack bacause the pocket wasn't lockable. Then they put a Business Class
Priority tag on the pack so it would be first off because I would only have
half an hour to transfer flights at the other end, at Santiago en route from
La Paz (and the other two places) to Buenos Aires. Somehow we managed it.
I say we because I had a lot of help from Lan Chile and One World Alliance
staff who took it in turns to escort me around the airport at top speed, cutting
corners with customs and all sorts. With all the running around (flat out
sprinting in my tramping boots) at Santiago Airport it was nice to be back
at sea level. My coin collection is beginning to raise eyebrows, though.
God bless.
