A revelation from a reader:

Ian, that is not a UFO. It is some structure. You can tell because there is a big column attaching the object to the ground. I didn't want to spoil your excitement, but that's the way I see it.

That's the tractor beam, and you can't actually see the bottom of it because it's lost in shadow.

... I can recognise the water tower, er, UFO space alien docking station for what it is.

UFO - Unidentified Fixed Object.
